JPG, PNG or WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?
Choose the right image format for photographs, transparent graphics, websites and document uploads.
Choose JPG for photographs
JPG is widely supported and compresses detailed photographs efficiently. It uses lossy compression, which discards some image information to create a smaller file. A sensible quality setting usually looks good on screen, but repeated saving can introduce visible artefacts around edges and text.
Choose PNG for graphics and transparency
PNG is a strong choice for logos, diagrams, screenshots and images containing sharp text. It supports transparent backgrounds and uses lossless compression. Photographs saved as PNG can be unnecessarily large because the format preserves every pixel exactly.
Choose WebP for modern websites
WebP can produce smaller photographs and graphics than older formats while retaining good visual quality. Modern browsers support it well, making it useful for faster websites. Check the requirements of older software or upload portals before relying on WebP outside the web.
Dimensions matter as much as format
A 4000-pixel photograph remains large even with an efficient format. Resize it to the dimensions actually needed, preserve its aspect ratio to avoid stretching, and compare the downloaded image with the original. Keep a master copy if you may need a larger version later.
